DEPARTMENT OF RADIATION ONCOLOGY
Introduction:
Radiation Oncology or radiotherapy is an integral part of comprehensive cancer care. A wide range of cancers can be treated with radiation therapy. In most cases, radiation therapy is coupled with surgery or chemotherapy for a better clinical outcome. Radiation therapy is a non-invasive or minimally invasive modality that uses high energy X-rays that destroys the DNA of cancer cells and thus resulting in death or slowing the growth of cancer cells. Advancement in technology has dramatically improved the treatment accuracy by delivering higher doses to target volume and adequately sparing normal tissue.
The Department of Radiation Oncology became operational by starting out-patient department (OPD) consultation at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Rajkot in February 2023, with the intent to provide state of art facilities to all oncological patients.

- To initiate a robust postgraduate training program and foster leadership development in the field of oncology.
- To coordinate multidisciplinary team approach to cancer care, through close collaboration with allied specialties such as Surgical Oncology, Medical Oncology, Pathology, Radiology, Nuclear Medicine, and other specialties that enable shared decision-making and promote comprehensive oncological care.
- To participate in the hospital-based National Cancer Registry program, a vital step to improvise the cancer care delivery system.
- To promote cancer prevention, education, and awareness.
Academics:
The Department of Radiation Oncology is involved in academics by conducting didactic and integrated lectures as a part of an MBBS curriculum for undergraduates.
Research:
The department anticipates working on several intramural as well as extramural projects along with multicentric studies in collaboration with other institutes.
