Department of Burns And Plastic Surgery

Introduction:

The Department of Burns and Plastic Surgery became operational at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Rajkot from January 25, 2025. Dr. Nupur Aggarwal, an alumnus of the prestigious Vardhman Mahavir Medical College and Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi was designated In-charge of the department. The department is currently providing both outdoor as well indoor, including operative, services to patients with plans for further expansion already in motion.

 

Vision:

  1. To evolve into a tertiary care centre providing state of the art services in the field of Burns, Plastic, Maxillofacial and Reconstructive Surgery.
  2. To become a centre of excellence for evidence-based research with a rigorous academic programme for both super speciality courses as well as PhD students/fellows.

 

Mission:

  1. To provide evidence-based holistic patient care in the domain of hand injuries, microvascular reconstruction for complex limb injuries, brachial plexus injuries, post burn reconstruction, maxillofacial trauma, oncoplastic reconstruction, Breast reconstruction, congenital anomalies like cleft lip & palate, syndactyly, polydactyly, camptodactyly, hypoplastic thumb etc. and aesthetic surgery (face/nose/breast/body).
  2. To establish a dedicated Burn Unit at AIIMS Rajkot, including an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for critically sick patients.
  3. To establish a robust super speciality training programme (M.Ch) with an impetus for further specialization in the form of fellowship courses.
  4. To start speciality clinics catering to the following domains- Hand and Microsurgery, Cleft clinic, Onco-reconstruction clinic, maxillofacial trauma clinic, brachial plexus injury clinic, Aesthetic Clinic and Burns reconstruction and rehabilitation clinic.
  5. To work closely with other departments such as Neurosurgery, Cardiac Surgery, Orthopaedic Surgery, Orthodontics department etc and  actively participate in institutional academic activities such as interdisciplinary clinics, clinical pathological conferences etc.

 

  1. To develop a dedicated team of physiotherapists and occupational therapists that plays a key role in the rehabilitation of post traumatic as well as post operative cases.
  2. To keep up with the latest advancements in technology and pursue sophisticated clinical research, thereby bringing the department at par with national as well as international centres of excellence.

 

Milestones:

  • Commencement of OPD services: January 2025
  • Commencement of IPD and Operative services: February 2025

 

Education:

The department aims to start the following academic training programmes:

 

  1. M.Ch in Plastic Surgery
  2. Fellowship course in Hand surgery, Microvascular surgery, Onco-reconstruction and Maxillofacial surgery.

 

Research:

The department anticipates work on a number of intramural as well as extramural projects along with multi-centric studies in collaboration with other institutes.
