The Viral Research and Diagnostic Laboratory (VRDL) at AIIMS, Rajkot, stands as a pinnacle of excellence in viral diagnostics and research. Operating under the auspices of the Department of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, the lab is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and is staffed by a team of dedicated scientists and technicians.

 

Mission: Our mission is to offer cutting-edge diagnostic services, facilitate ground-breaking research on viral diseases, and aid in the control and prevention of viral outbreaks. Through our endeavours, we aim to bolster public health responses and support clinical decisions.

 

Capabilities:

  • Advanced Diagnostics: Utilizing the latest molecular techniques, serological assays, and viral culture methods for accurate identification and characterization of viral pathogens including but not limited to Hepatitis A, B, C, and E viruses, Japanese Encephalitis virus, Dengue, Chikungunya, Herpes Simplex virus types 1 and 2, Cytomegalovirus, SARS-CoV-2, Influenza, Zika, and Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever virus
  • Research Initiatives: Engaging in research projects that aim to uncover new insights into viral pathogenesis, epidemiology, and potential therapeutic targets.
  • Training and Workshops: Regularly conducting training sessions and workshops to disseminate knowledge about viral diseases and diagnostics among healthcare professionals.
  • Collaborations: Actively partnering with national and international institutions for collective research efforts and knowledge exchange.

Facilities:

The VRDL lab currently boasts a state-of-the-art BSL-2 containment facility, ensuring the safe handling and study of various pathogens. We're also excited to announce that a state-of-the-art BSL-3 containment facility is in the pipeline and will be operational in the near future. Our lab is equipped with modern instruments such as Real-Time PCR machines and coming up with Next Generation Sequencing, and tissue culture facility in the near future positioning us at the forefront of viral diagnostics and research.
